The Firmament

About the house

The Firmament is a curated house — forty-three charts, not thirty-three thousand. Every piece is a masterwork of celestial cartography from the 16th to 18th centuries, chosen because it changed how humanity pictured the heavens, and every one is centuries out of copyright.

The originals sleep in the great collections — the Linda Hall Library, the Rijksmuseum, the David Rumsey Map Collection, observatory libraries the world over. Faithful scans of public-domain works are free for anyone to reproduce; what we sell is the curation, the scholarship, the print quality, and the wonder. Prints on EMA matte art paper, stretched canvas, box frames under acrylic, and metallic gold-ink editions — the gold in which Cellarius’s colorists drew the gods — at sizes where the engraving itself becomes visible.

We are a house of Provenance, part of the Painted family, and a sibling to Cartographer’s Dream and Painted Myths. Every factual claim on this site about a chart — who made it, when, what it revealed — is verified before it is published. Provenance and wonder are the product, never the file.
